NEEM SEED POWDER (AN ORGANIC PESTICIDE)

Background
- Neem tree is known to be medicinal in the country (known in the country as Muharobaini) can cure about 40 types of illnesses.
- Plant very well propagated in the coast province especially Kilifi district.
- Weevil attack in parts of eastern province caused loss of lots of harvested crop especially; maize early this year even with the use of actellic supper. Farmers selling maize at as low as Ksh 2.
- The climatic conditions in the region favour weevil multiplication.
- Neem tree buck has been used in soap making but now a danger to the tree (ringing).
- Neem seed just falls off the trees in plenty and is being moved up country for other uses.
- Thought of the use of the seed not very widely explored.
- On trial and error basis, the following Neem seed use was carried out.
Requirements:
- Neem seed (dried)
- Maize grain
- Motar and pestle
- Warm water
- Gunny bags
- Some ash (wood ash)
Method:
- Grind Neem seed to powder using motar and pestle
- Mix powder and warm water in the ratio of 4:1; add some wood ash
- Let the solution cool and set for 24 hours
- Soak the storage gunny bags (sisal/jute)
- Dry gunny bags under shed
- Store your grain in the bags.
Results
- Grain stored for over 3 months weevil free
Comments
- Though labour-intensive, a safe grain storage method
- Further exploration is necessary.
