Ethiopia, as most African countries is suffering from food insecurity and extreme poverty. Main causes can be accounted to emanated from natural resources degradation. This in turn can be directed to population pressure, deforestation, soil erosion, natural and man-made calamities, lack of appropriate land management, etc. coupled with the absence of good governance and the not yet fully implemented democratization process exacerbate the situation as any where else. Thus the majority of the population is food insecure and can below the standard poverty line of us now.

Vision

The situation in the country is well assessed. The Government, “The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia” is currently committed to change this “shameful face” of the country.

Since the last three years a comprehensive strategy of food security and poverty reduction paper was designed and is under implementation. The strategy focuses on sustainable Agricultural and Rural Development. It is quite natural that the development strategy focuses on rural area for about 87% of the population is depending on agricultural production. In addition, the agricultural potential of the country is not sufficiently taped. Therefore, there is a wide development scope on that area. More over, agriculture is the main source of employment and income generation, thus the economic backbone of the country.
