Background

Under the sponsorship of the German Government, the Food and Agriculture Development Center (ZEL) of the German Foundation for International Development (DSE), in co-operation with the German Institute for Tropical and Subtropical Agriculture (DITSL), an international workshop entitled "Ecofarming: Ecologically and Socially Sustainable Land Management" was conducted. The workshop took place in Ethiopia from November, 16th until December the 11th 1998.

In order to facilitate further exchange of experiences among the participants of the workshop, a network, called the Network for Ecofarming in Africa (NECOFA) was founded. Further professionals, networks and organisations working in the same field have joined in since. NECOFA aims at acting as a forum to support all national and international activities supporting ecologically and sociologically sustainable land use management in Africa.

 

Future activities

• NECOFA will assist national groups and members to sensitize political and administrative decision makers regarding issues of ecofarming, to elaborate information and extension materials and to realize meetings, information and training workshops.
• NECOFA will provide scientific and conceptual advise to its members regarding planning and performance of small-scale participatory projects in ecofarming.
• NECOFA will provide a platform of experience exchange, exchange of research results and coordination of new applied research projects to prevent unproductive repetitions.
